Choose a combination that suits your trip
QR payments are common in cafés, restaurants and shops. A working mobile wallet is useful, but a physical card and modest cash reserve give you options when a phone battery, connection or merchant system fails.
For a short visit, ask your hotel and transport providers what they accept before deciding which new accounts you need. A supported home-market wallet or UnionPay service may also work, subject to your account and the participating merchant.
| Tool | Useful for | Check before departure |
|---|---|---|
| Alipay / Weixin Pay | Everyday merchant payments and selected transport or mini-program services | Your own account, eligible card and verification status |
| Physical bank card | Merchants displaying your card network, hotel payments and backup | Overseas/online settings, deposits and issuer fees |
| RMB cash | Small offline purchases and a backup when a phone fails | Smaller notes, withdrawal options and the service’s payment process |

Prepare your account and identification before flying
Install current official apps and register with a number you can continue to receive messages on. Alipay permits advance registration with an overseas number. Weixin Pay also accepts eligible international cards; menus and verification steps vary by account, region and version.
Enter your identity and card details exactly as requested. Complete checks inside the official app. A linked card does not automatically unlock every merchant, balance top-up or person-to-person transfer.
Prepare your own documents
Have your passport and card ready. Check that your issuer permits the relevant overseas, online or wallet transactions and that you can receive its verification messages.
Follow the official linking flow
Use Alipay’s bank-card area, or the current WeChat path under Me, Services, Wallet and Bank Cards. Follow the prompts rather than an old screenshot.
Make a small test after arrival
Complete an ordinary low-value purchase, confirm the successful transaction and check the card record before depending on the wallet for an important payment.

03
Know which QR code you are using
You may scan a merchant’s code and enter an amount, or show your payment code for the cashier to scan. Check the merchant name and total before approval. Do not send a payment-code screenshot to someone else, and do not treat an image of a success screen as proof of receipt.
An international-card merchant purchase is different from a personal transfer, red packet or balance top-up. If a code rejects your card, ask for another official payment method. Public-transport codes may need separate activation; an ordinary wallet payment code is not necessarily a gate ticket.

04
Read fees and limits on your own payment screen
Costs can include a platform fee, your issuer’s foreign-transaction charge and its currency-conversion rules. Read the amount and fees before approval, then check the eventual bank entry. Successful linking is not evidence that every purchase is free.
Promotions depend on eligibility and dates. Tencent announced a qualifying new-user fee-waiver programme in 2026, so an older guide’s single percentage is not a universal rule. Confirm benefits and limits in your account, especially before a large hotel deposit or purchase.
- Keep order numbers, merchant names and transaction times.
- Do not split transactions to evade verification or limits.
- If offered different settlement currencies, compare the displayed amounts and your issuer’s terms before choosing.

05
Keep cash and a card as practical fallbacks
RMB cash remains a payment option, but not every online booking, unattended machine or self-service process can take notes. Check the available counter or machine options before relying on cash for a particular service. Smaller notes are more practical than carrying a large reserve.
For withdrawals, look for your card-network logo on a bank ATM and review screen charges and issuer terms. Bank of China supports several international networks, but success still depends on the card, issuer and machine. If a card is retained, record the location and contact the managing bank; never disclose the PIN to a passer-by.

06
Treat deposits and booking payments separately
A hotel deposit, room payment, attraction ticket and tour booking may follow different rules. Ask about accepted card networks and how a deposit is released. A released authorisation and a refund are different processes; timing depends on the merchant, platform and bank.
After cancelling, check the original order and refund route and keep written confirmation. Never send a separate personal transfer to “unlock” a refund. For SACTOUR bookings, use the agreed order, payment instructions and cancellation policy; this everyday-payment guide does not replace your travel contract.

07
Resolve a failed payment in a sensible order
First distinguish failed, pending and successful. A pending result is a reason to check, rather than immediately pay again. Ask the merchant to check its record while you review the order and bank notification.
Check the connection and recipient
Restore data, confirm the merchant, currency and total, and use the business’s official collection channel.
Read the actual error
Look for identity, expiry, balance, limit or issuer-decline messages. Contact in-app support or your bank through an official channel.
Use a confirmed alternative
With the merchant’s agreement, try another card, wallet or accepted cash payment. Keep the earlier transaction record in case it later completes.

Q & A
A few useful questions
Do I need a Chinese bank account for a holiday?
Not necessarily. Eligible overseas visitors can link supported international cards to major wallets for merchant purchases, subject to platform and issuer verification. This does not provide every function of a domestic bank account.
Can I use cash and skip payment apps?
Plan around your preferences, but check hotels, transport, online reservations and self-service processes in advance. Cash cannot directly replace every online step. A physical card or a reputable service helping with specific bookings can provide another option.
Why does my card work at one shop but fail at another?
Merchant collection types, supported networks, account verification, platform controls and connections can differ. Read the error and ask for an official alternative. Never send card numbers, CVV codes or one-time passwords to a stranger.
