Phones and internet: get connected before you need directions

Data, verification messages, a local number and a way to contact your driver are separate needs. Check what your device and plan actually provide, then keep essential travel details available offline.

THREE THINGS TO REMEMBER

Jump to a section

01

Choose for your needs before comparing prices

Maps and messaging may be enough for you, or you may also need bank verification messages, calls to a driver or a local number for a service. Data does not automatically include those features. Compare coverage, validity, allowance, hotspot support and overage rules against your actual needs.

Roaming, a local SIM and a travel data eSIM suit different trips. For a multi-city journey, check the whole route. In mountain areas, useful offline information is more dependable than an expectation of uninterrupted signal.

OptionUseful whenAsk before buying
Home-number roamingYou prefer to retain your number and minimise SIM changesMainland coverage, calls, SMS, data limits and charges
Local operator SIMYou need an eligible local number and associated servicesDevice compatibility, passport registration, plan terms and cancellation
Travel data eSIMYou want short-term data on a compatible deviceData-only status, hotspot use, validity start and support

02

Use an authorised outlet for a local SIM

China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom provide local services. Take your valid original passport or other eligible identification to an outlet able to handle your document type. Confirm eligibility, device compatibility and the plan; products and registration support can differ by outlet.

Ask about the total charge, validity, allowance, calls, SMS, renewal and cancellation. Record the number and keep the terms and official support details, rather than leaving with only a photograph of the packaging.

  1. Explain that you are a short-term visitor

Give your trip length, destinations and calling or messaging needs. A headline minimum price is not a complete comparison.

  2. Activate and test at the outlet

Complete the operator’s real-name process and test mobile data. If calls or SMS are included, test them separately.

  3. Know what happens later

Ask how to check usage, recharge, manage expiry and close or stop the service after departure.

03

Match the eSIM to the exact device and product

An eSIM-capable phone cannot necessarily install every mainland-operator or travel-provider profile. Model, purchase region, carrier restrictions, software and the specific product all matter. Give the supplier the exact model, rather than simply “an iPhone” or “an Android”.

A mainland local-operator eSIM and an overseas travel data eSIM are separate products. Apple’s current mainland guidance lists particular supported models and in-person activation conditions; it does not mean every overseas iPhone can obtain a local eSIM. Confirm installation location, activation and the validity clock for travel eSIMs, and do not delete your original profile casually.

04

Plan data and verification messages separately

If your device and plans support dual SIM, ask about retaining your original number for account messages while using another line for travel data. Receiving SMS, taking calls, voicemail and data roaming can have different charges. None should be assumed free.

Check account access and recovery before changing SIMs. Review the default data line, calling line and each line’s roaming settings so a payment verification request does not become your first test after arrival. Menu names depend on the device and software.

  • Save the home carrier’s international support channel, without storing passwords as plain text.
  • Keep the number used by important accounts valid throughout the trip.
  • Update a registered number only inside the service’s official settings.

05

Do a short arrival connection check

Test before ordering a ride or setting off for the hotel. Airport Wi-Fi, mobile data and app sign-in can require separate activation. A Wi-Fi symbol alone does not prove that the connection is usable.

  1. Check the selected data line

Follow the plan’s activation or roaming instructions and check allowance and expiry. Avoid changing several settings blindly.

  2. Open something you will actually use

Load your hotel map, send a message and open your payment app. Ask the supplier for help before deleting an eSIM that fails to connect.

  3. Confirm your pickup information

Check the Chinese meeting-point description, terminal and contact details against the agreed transfer instructions.

06

Keep essential information on the device

Download the hotel’s Chinese name and full address, booking references, meeting point, station names and contacts, with a small paper backup. Turn off the connection and test them. Cloud favourites, email links and bookmarks are not necessarily readable offline.

Download both supported languages in your translation app and test text, camera and speech separately: an offline claim does not cover every feature. Public Wi-Fi may need a phone, room number or portal sign-in. Confirm the correct hotel network and decline unfamiliar certificate or remote-control installation requests.

  • Save important addresses as Chinese text and a location screenshot.
  • Download essentials before departure rather than relying on large airport downloads.
  • Agree the next check-in time before a long journey or a low-signal outing.

07

No plan is a promise that every service will work

Online services and messaging availability depend on the network, region, device and provider. Ask the supplier about your actual requirements before purchasing. We do not promise that a particular data product reaches every overseas website or treat a VPN as guaranteed trip communication.

Agree two usable contact channels with your companions and SACTOUR. If the connection fails, check allowance, validity and the selected line, follow device guidance and contact the operator or plan supplier. Do not send verification codes, full passport images or payment credentials to an unsolicited “network support” account.

Q & A

A few useful questions

Does a travel eSIM include a Chinese phone number?

Not necessarily. Many products are data-only. Check the exact plan for a number, calls and SMS, and separately confirm any app’s verification requirements. A product name is not proof of those features.

Can I travel with an eSIM-only phone?

Check the exact model, purchase region and proposed plan first. Compatible roaming or travel data may be options, while a mainland local-operator eSIM has its own eligibility requirements. Confirm with both manufacturer and provider.

Can hotel Wi-Fi replace mobile data?

It can cover some time online, but directions, rides, communication and payments away from the hotel may still need a connection. Prepare an option you can use outside, plus offline addresses and contacts.
