01
Start with what you want to remember
China is a large country with very different regional experiences. You do not need to collect every landmark on one holiday. Pick two or three priorities—history, daily life, landscapes, food or time together as a family—and use them to choose your stops.
Beijing and Xi’an suit a history-led journey. Guilin, Yangshuo and Zhangjiajie offer contrasting landscapes. Chengdu, Chongqing and Guangzhou make space for teahouses, neighbourhood walks and local food. Shanghai can bring architecture, museums and urban neighbourhoods into the same stay.
- Separate the places that matter most from those you would add only if time allows.
- For mountain visits, consider walking distances, access transport and a weather alternative.
- Discuss ages, mobility, dietary needs and rest time before fixing the route.
02
Plan around the time you really have
Count usable days in China after allowing for international flights. Keep arrival day light, with time to check in and adjust. Allow for airport travel and airline procedures on departure day. An intercity move includes packing, hotel transfers, security and your next check-in, not just the journey printed on a ticket.
| Time available | One sensible approach | What to protect |
|---|---|---|
| 3–5 days | One city or a close regional pair, such as Beijing or Guilin and Yangshuo | Fewer hotel changes and an unhurried half-day |
| 6–9 days | Two neighbouring cities or a clearly focused multicity route | Avoid moving to a new hotel every day |
| 10–14 days | A combination of history, nature and contemporary city life | Rest time and flexibility around outdoor days |
| Longer stays | Smaller places and deeper regional exploration | Re-entry arrangements, laundry and luggage planning |
03
Put the season and holiday calendar into the plan
No single month suits the whole country. Northern cities, southern China and mountain areas have different temperatures and rainfall. Even spring and autumn can bring cold spells, rain or busy travel dates. Choose your route first, then check each destination’s seasonal conditions and the forecast nearer departure.
If your dates overlap with Spring Festival, Labour Day, National Day or another public holiday, verify the actual dates for your travel year before confirming major transport and hotels. Keep an alternative for mountain visits, cruises and other outdoor activities; check operating notices locally.
- In summer, leave room for shade, drinking water and an indoor break.
- Northern winter routes need suitable warm clothing; southern destinations can also feel damp and cold.
- Tell your planner how much walking and weather exposure works for your group.
04
Check entry arrangements before locking in key bookings
Visa requirements depend on nationality, passport type, visit purpose, length of stay and your complete itinerary. Visa-free entry, visa-free transit and entry using a visa have different conditions. Seeing the words “visa-free” does not establish that your trip qualifies.
Check your previous stop, mainland entry port, planned stay and onward destination together. Include Hong Kong, Macao and any further mainland entry in that check. When a policy is approaching an effective or expiry date, consult current National Immigration Administration and Chinese embassy or consular information.

05
Keep arrival-day information together
Carry your passport, required visa or entry documents, flight details, hotel name and address in Chinese and English, pickup arrangements and a usable contact number. Save offline copies of key information. Keep the original passport secure and available when required; a photo does not replace the original for every procedure.
Travellers who need an arrival card can use official NIA channels before arrival. The official online service is free. An arrival card is not a visa or entry permission; port-based electronic or paper options remain available if you have not completed it online. Avoid paid advertising pages presented as an official application service.
Before leaving the terminal
Confirm your phone connection and the exact driver meeting point or transfer desk. Match the pickup details rather than relying on a similar name.
After reaching your hotel
Complete check-in and registration, confirm breakfast, checkout and the next meeting time, and keep the first evening simple.

06
Prepare a main way to pay and a backup
Mobile payments are useful, but one phone and one bank card should not be your entire plan. Install your chosen payment app, complete the requested checks, add a supported card and make sure your number can receive any required verification messages.
Bring a working physical card and some RMB cash. Support for a card, QR code or feature depends on the account, issuer and merchant type. Fees, exchange rates and promotions can differ. Check the RMB amount before authorising payment; if a transaction fails, check its status before trying again.
- Treat daily spending and a tour booking as separate payment arrangements. Do not assume a method is supported if the website or written proposal has not confirmed it.
- Confirm travel costs against the written proposal, payment instructions and booking conditions.
- Keep payment passwords, verification codes and remote-control access private.
07
Compare door-to-door travel time
Compare the complete journey from one hotel to the next. A train trip includes station access, security, waiting and the arrival transfer. A flight includes airport access, check-in and baggage collection. Cities may have several similar station or airport names; save the Chinese name and exact terminal.
Names and document details on rail and flight bookings should match the document you will use to travel. Check seats, luggage, connections, amendment terms and pickup scope before fitting a service into your itinerary. Avoid an unnecessarily tight connection after an arriving international flight.

08
Confirm the hotel, check-in and registration
Explain party size, children’s ages, bed preferences, smoking preferences, accessibility needs and arrival time when booking. An English hotel name may not identify a unique property. Save its Chinese name, full address and map location as well as the booking title.
Hotels handle accommodation registration under the applicable rules. Foreign visitors staying in a private home or other non-hotel accommodation, or their hosts, must complete registration within 24 hours of arrival at the residence. Confirm the current local process and available online channel with the host and relevant official service. Check registration arrangements again when changing accommodation.

09
Make your phone useful when it matters
Decide whether to use international roaming, a suitable travel data plan or a local SIM after arrival. Check the device, carrier lock, coverage and calling or SMS functions first. Having data does not necessarily mean you can receive an account-verification message.
Try your payment, mapping, transport and translation tools before leaving. Download useful offline resources and save hotel, pickup and insurance information somewhere that does not require a live connection. Networks and services can differ in availability, so agree a workable way to stay in touch with your companions.
10
Leave room for food and everyday discoveries
One or two meaningful experiences can make a more enjoyable day than a chain of rushed attractions. A market, teahouse, park or neighbourhood walk near your main activity helps you see everyday life. Ask before photographing people or entering a privately run space.
For allergies, vegetarian or religious dietary requirements and children’s meals, prepare clear written Chinese explanations and confirm again when ordering. Ingredients and cooking practices vary, so a familiar dish name is not enough to establish suitability. Tell your planner about mobility needs, pushchairs and regular rest breaks early.
- Carry the hotel’s Chinese address, drinking water and a day bag suitable for the activity.
- Keep free time, and agree an exact meeting point if a pickup is involved.
- Before changing a plan, check the effect on reservations, transport and cost.
11
Compare quotes using the same checklist
Look beyond a per-person starting price. Compare dates, party size, hotels and rooms, daily activities, trains or flights, tickets, guiding language, pickup scope and meals. Children, single rooms, peak dates and a different party size may need a separate calculation.
Tell your planner what matters most, your budget range and what you would prefer to avoid. Before payment, confirm the complete written proposal, final total, service and payment details, and cancellation, amendment and refund conditions. We can help refine the route and arrangements; specific availability follows the final confirmed information.
12
Seven final checks before departure
Complete tasks that need a reliable connection before you leave where possible, and share the most useful emergency information with your companions. Keep everyone working from the latest itinerary after a change.
- Documents and entry: correct passport, required visa or eligibility checks, and onward travel.
- Bookings and pickups: hotel address in Chinese, terminal or station, meeting point and contact details.
- Payments: app setup checked, with a physical card and cash backup.
- Connectivity: compatible device and plan, with a way to receive verification messages.
- Luggage: airline and railway requirements checked, suitable clothing and personal essentials.
- Support: insurance information, emergency contacts and consular details available offline.
- Pace: room around arrival and transfer days, with alternatives for weather or reservations.
Q & A
A few useful questions
Does a first trip have to include Beijing, Shanghai and Xi’an?
No. One or two cities, or a single region, can make a complete journey. Landscapes, local food or an unhurried family holiday are equally good starting points. Choose the places around your interests and available days.
Can I request a quote before every detail is decided?
Yes. Share approximate dates, party size, children’s ages, places of interest and a budget range. Explain which ideas are flexible so your planner can suggest a realistic route.
Can I use the entry and payment information indefinitely?
Use the practical preparation steps, then recheck applicable policies, fees, verification requirements and service conditions before departure. Each topic guide links to official or provider information so you can confirm your own circumstances.
